Lashes Out at Casino Gaming Industry

December 6th, 2007

Russian President Vladimir Putin offered a scalding critique of the casino gaming industry yesterday.

The Russian President held a press conference yesterday to deliver harsh words against the casino gaming industry representatives who have sought to use facilities belonging to the Russian Orthodox Church for gambling hall purposes. Developers had announced the intent to turn the patriarchal mission in the city of Sokolniki into a casino.

President Putin made the following comments on the topic of the casino gaming industry’s attempt to reporters at his press conference:

There is nothing good in it. I am sure that business, especially the gambling business, which may develop rather well, with a considerable profit rate, do not have to harm the feelings of believers by adjusting particular facilities for the solution of their own business problems.

President Putin added what seemed like a threat to the casino gambling industry, warning representatives that they are treading on thin ice.

The more so that in the gambling industry in general, this matter should be treated very reservedly, very carefully, he said.

The gaming industry in Moscow and other Russian cities is booming, creating a backlash by government officials and a concerned public.
